Worship Leader – Responsibilities

  • The worship leader should review the service plan on Planning Center and communicate to the rest of the team as necessary in order to ensure good team preparation prior to Thursday rehearsal. (NOTE: worship director and creative arts pastor will make vocal notes, song sequence updates, and final song updates to the planning site by the Monday before rehearsal. The worship leader should also check email during the week for any last minute updates from the worship director, creative arts pastor, or any team members who have questions about the plan).
  • Develop a rehearsal plan and does his/her best to effectively use rehearsal time, striving to keep it to 90 minutes
  • Check the song keys for “singability” and make sure songs are in an appropriate range for the worship leader and congregation. Before changing a key, the worship leader should decide if someone else who is scheduled on the team that week could lead the song well in the original key, and check with band leader to make sure that the key change will not cause guitar voicing issues.
  • Communicate as necessary and helpful with band leader, co-leader, band members or any tech booth personnel prior to rehearsal in order to have a smooth and effective rehearsal.
  • Prepare for, and lead band through rehearsing songs AND transitions between songs
  • Is able to communicate effectively and concisely to the congregation, as necessary, during a song set
  • Expected to encourage, demonstrate, and direct a collaborative process during rehearsals (asking for input and feedback among the band members, and including tech team members in the process) along with the band leader
  • Listens to the band members’ needs and communicates them during rehearsals and before and after services to the tech team and/or producer (if to the producer only, then it is the producer’s responsibility to communicate to the rest of the tech team)
  • Is comfortable praying aloud as appropriate during a song set (keeping in mind what Jesus says about praying in Matthew 6:7) and works to cultivate a life of private prayer and praise.
  • Worship leaders can also be band leaders and share band leadership responsibilities during rehearsal.
  • The worship leader encourages, reinforces, and celebrates the positive contributions of others
